Site choosing

Cliffs of Moher is located in County Clare, Ireland. The cliffs rise 120 meters above the Atlantic Ocean and eight kilometers away.

The reason why i chosen this site is that Moher Cliff is the highest cliff in Europe country. That is really match my requirements. First, the cliff is high and the coast is long, people can feel isolate once build a building on that cliff, so the sense of a girl is trapped can be seen. Second, no matter the girl is sitting in front of the window or moving around inside the building, doing her housework, she always can get very good view of ocean. She is so missing and worrying about her husband that she always stare at the ocean. one day, her husband come back from far away from ocean, she wants to be the first person to know that.

Project 2-Room and Narrative

Johan Vermeer was a Dutch Baroque painter who specialized in exquisite, domestic interior scenes of middle class life. Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial genre painter in his lifetime. He seems never to have been particularly wealthy, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death, perhaps because he produced relatively few paintings.

Vermeer worked slowly and with great care, using bright colours and sometimes expensive pigments, with a preference for cornflower blue and yellow. He is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work.

Recognized during his lifetime in Delft and The Hague, his modest celebrity gave way to obscurity after his death; he was barely mentioned in Arnold Houbraken's major source book on 17th century Dutch painting (Grand Theatre of Dutch Painters and Women Artists), and was thus omitted from subsequent surveys of Dutch art for nearly two centuries. In the 19th century Vermeer was rediscovered by Gustav Friedrich Waagen and Théophile Thoré-Bürger, who published an essay attributing sixty-six pictures to him, although only thirty-five paintings are firmly attributed to him today. Since that time Vermeer's reputation has grown, and he is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age.

Project 1 : Venna Venturi - Mother's House

Location: Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia
Function: Private house

The house Robert Venturi build for his mother, set at the end of a lane extending Sunriselane. This building recognizes complexities and contradictions: it is both complex and simple, open and closed, big and little; some of its elements are good on one level and bad on another; its order accommodates the generic elements of the house in general, and the circumstantial elements of a house in particular. It achieves the difficult unity of a medium number of diverse parts rather than the easy unity of few or many motival parts.
